Performance Modelling of a DWDM Ring Optical Network with Wavelength Conversion and Satellite

Over the recent years, routing and wavelength assignment algorithms (RWA) have been employed to increase the performance of existing optical network architectures. However, these methods are not longer sufficient as the traffic over the Internet increases rapidly and new switching optical network architectures are needed to provide additional bandwidth. This paper reports an investigation into the performance of a dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical ring network with wavelength conversion and satellite support. Typical numerical experiments are analyzed via simulation modelling at 95% confidence intervals. It is shown that, as the speed of the satellite increases, the performance of the ring optical network improves significantly.
